In 1986, Jerry and Janie Murrell gave their four sons an ultimatum: “Go to college or start a business”. Twenty years later, and Five Guys is now an internationally renowned burger chain, with over 1,000 franchisees in the US and 1,500 global sites in development.

It all started with a simple offering: hand-formed prime beef burgers grilled to perfection and served with fresh-cut fries cooked in pure peanut oil. Since then, this offering hasn’t changed. Five Guys continues to serve its trademark burgers and fries, except now they’re available in the UK.

The Beginnings

Five Guys launched its first UK outlet in Covent Garden on the site of the former Long Acre bar unit on 4th July 2014. But for six months prior to the launch, we had been working closely with Five Guys to help this site materialise successfully; pilot testing our systems and running regular live cooking demonstrations at our test kitchen facility in Welwyn Garden City. Potatoes were imported from America, peanut oil bought in especially and burger after burger after burger grilled to thoroughly test our equipment.

High Five, Guys!

The Long Acre site is fitted with a bespoke CCA (Canopy Containment Air) technology hood: a high-performance and efficient piece of equipment designed to prevent the spread of smoke, odour and convective heat across the kitchen.

The extract system is also an integral part of the restaurant’s design scheme. Unique to Five Guys, it’s been powder-coated in their brand’s bright red colour, and looks really striking against the white ceilings – if we do say so ourselves.

Overall, it’s been a very successful project. Completed on time and in budget, it’s been a pleasure to work so closely with such a highly respected company. And testing out all those chips wasn’t too bad either.
